The purpose of this RenderWeekly project was to find a rugged thermostat form that could be used in a shop environment as an assistant, and could be easily read and adjusted from across the room.
Overview
- Brief
A RenderWeekly project: a rugged thermostat for a shop that also acts as an assistant.
- Users
People working in a shop or garage who need to read and adjust the temperature from across the room.
- Design response
Large numerals and a big dial in a rugged housing, mounted to the shop wall.
Design language
Built for the shop, not the living room: legible from across the room and tough enough to live next to tools.
- Form
A rounded square with one curved corner, carrying big numerals and an arc gauge.
- Legibility
Oversized temperature readout and a clear color arc, readable from a distance.
- Detail
A rugged knob and a perforated-rail mount that matches pegboard and shelving.
- Material
Dark and off-white housings that sit with timber, steel and pegboard.
