Omitted due to NDA: technical drawings, ideation on internal features, weight-reducing features, market research and packaging design.
Through market research and surveys from Motech customers, this was the most requested product: a waterfall countertop for both kitchen islands and bathroom vanities. Further research quickly made us realize this was unrealistic for most companies due to the cost of manufacturing and shipping. Thanks to my fabrication and generative CAD background, and a seemingly endless amount of prototyping and ideation, an internal weight-reducing structure for our resin molds was procedurally generated to make this challenge a reality.
Overview
- Problem
Customers' most-requested product was a waterfall countertop, but solid-surface waterfalls are heavy and expensive to make and ship.
- Solution
A cast resin waterfall top with a procedurally generated internal structure that takes weight out of the mold, refined through many rounds of prototyping.
- Applies to
Kitchen islands and bathroom vanities.
Design language
The waterfall is a gesture borrowed from high-end stone work: one surface that refuses to stop at the edge.
- Form
The top folds over the cabinet and runs to the floor as one continuous plane, so an island or vanity reads as a single, solid block.
- Material
A veined, quartz-look surface against painted shaker-style cabinetry and matte black pulls: soft veining against crisp, dark hardware.
- Proportion
The waterfall end gives the furniture visual weight at the floor. The hidden internal structure keeps that weight visual rather than literal.
- Presentation
Staged in warm, daylit kitchens and baths, so the piece reads as part of a room, not as a part.
